Thinking (and Betting) Really Long-Term

Hey, I’ve been lazy and have taken an unnecessary and unscheduled break. Feel free to mock my laziness. Anyway, today’s post includes two links regarding the Long Now Foundation, which emphasize very long-term thinking.
The Long Now Foundation
Maybe you think that you think more ahead than other people. You scoff at hasty, short-term decisions. Well you got nothing on these guys. You think decades ahead? These guys think millennia ahead. Building a clock meant to last about ten thousand years, and writing dates with a zero in front in anticipation of the years 10,000 and following are just two projects of these guys. They also hold seminars on long-term thinking, which can be ordered on DVD for the low, low price of 12.99! We’ll also throw in… Oh wait, never mind. Anyway, I’ll probably be writing more on these people in the future as well as people make predictions about the future, which coincidentally is related to the next link…
Long Bets
No, not long shot bets, but long term bets. This site, run by the Long Now Foundation, allows users to make long-term bets. They are limited to major social or political concerns, so no sports bets. Also, all winnings go to charities of the winner’s choosing for legal (and altruistic reasons). Some of these bets are very long, one going to about 300 years.
